Back in the early days of Eighty Second & 2nd, we posted this great old short documentary based on a (at the time) struggling up-and-coming stand up comedian named Chris Rock. Well the video has started to make the rounds again around the internet and we thought help get it back out there again! Watch Chris perform some of his original act on stage at the Comic Strip Live! and get interviewed standing out in front of the club.
A fun little note on the clip, is the video of Chris performing stand up on stage was taped by another longtime friend of the Strip, 30 Rock‘s Judah Friedlander!
Let’s take it back a few years!
Once upon a time on Comedy Central, there was an AMAZING, original television show called “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn.” It featured Colin and a round-table of hilarious comedians discussing the weeks events. It was a groundbreaking show that was far ahead of its time, as evidenced by many shows that have borrowed their format in the years that have past.
On occasion, Colin and the gang would act out sketches live in front of their studio audience. In the scene below, Jim Norton is being coached by Colin to be a gentleman in the hopes of possibly winning over a lady. That lucky lady is none other than one of the Comic Strip Live‘s best friends, Shauna Lane!
Check it out!
Congratulations Shauna! There is no one else in the world like you! You’re the best!
Comic Strip Live! favorite Marina Franklin received an incredible honor this week when Time Out New York listed her as one of the 50 Funniest New Yorkers!
Marina joins such comedy icons as Woody Allen, David Letterman, The Coen Brothers, Tina Fey and Jon Stewart. The short list also includes Comic Strip alums Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Colin Quinn and more. Check out the entire list here!
Franklin, who has appeared on NBC’s The Jay Leno Show and Last Comic Standing, CBS’s The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Comedy Central’s The Awkward Kings of Comedy and Premium Blend is one of the most respected and talented comedians in the city. She performs regularly at the Comic Strip.

Earlier today, longtime friend of the Comic Strip Live! Jim Gaffigan released his new 75-minute stand up special “Mr. Universe.”
“Mr. Universe” is Gaffigan’s third hour-long special (following 2006’s “Beyond The Pale” and 2009’s “King Baby”) and he is the third stand up comic to release his special exclusively online for video download. As it currently stands, “Mr. Universe” will not run on television or be sold in stores and the only way to get it is by purchasing a download for $5 on his website JimGaffigan.com
Here is a sample clip from the new special.
I woke up this morning to this having been posted on our Facebook wall. It is a flyer (yes, and actually physical paper flyer that people would give out hand-to-hand) for an old game show that used to be run live at the Comic Strip Live! called Comic Discipline. The photo was posted by Karen O and featured on the poster are Eddie Brill (Letterman) Mike Sweeney (head writer for Conan) and club favorite Wali Collins! I don’t know very much about the show, but this show, which took place on March 31st, 1994 was the first time it took place. A very cool find.
